How to Look After Your Trees This Fall

How to Look After Your Trees This Fall
You could do some simple things to make sure your trees are in good health for the cold fall weeks ahead.

Fall is here in full swing, and we can already see leaves falling down from the trees in our neighborhoods and communities. Taking care of your trees for the fall is essential, as a lot of them will be going through some evident changes as the weather begins to get more chilly. You could do some simple things to make sure your trees are in good health for the cold months ahead. Read on to learn just how you can take care of your trees this fall!

Remember to Fertilize

One of the best tree care tips to keep them healthy is to apply plenty of fertilizer in the fall to help protect them from any winter damage. Trees in natural forests have a special environment that provides them with the nutrients and healthy soil they need, but the trees in your yard aren’t always so fortunate. Trees that are in suburban and urban spaces face high-stress conditions live through construction, compaction, low moisture conditions, and physical damage. Allow your trees to reach their max potential in your landscape this fall, and make sure to fertilize consistently throughout all the seasons.

Rake Your Leaves Regularly

If you have any trees located on your property that have plenty of leaves, do not wait until all of them have fallen down to begin raking. Not only will it be a weekend-long event that you have to spend hours upon hours attending to, but when you do leave them to relax on your lawn, they trap the moisture between themselves and the ground. This provides the ideal environment for fungus and mildew to thrive. When these growths start to spread, they could infect your trees and spread diseases to other plants that live in your yard.

Water Your Trees When It’s Dry

Although we get both wet and dry days of the fall season here in Maryland, it is important to note lengthened periods of dryness and give your trees the hydration and nourishment they’ve been going without. Focus on their roots, as wetting their foliage is typically pointless and could promote multiple diseases. Watering them in the morning instead of the evening is also a better practice since it prevents evaporation and will keep the trees hydrated on sporadically warmer days of the fall.
