Why Fall is the Best Time for Tree Planting

Why Fall is the Best Time for Tree Planting
Fall, believe it or not, might be the ideal time to plant your trees.

For lots of folks who love to take care of their lawn, spring has become the default season when it comes to tree planting and gardening, and for good reason. Long, cold winters make it impossible for us to refresh our gardens and landscape our yards. Spring is an excellent time of year to plant, depending on where you live. Fall, believe it or not, might be the ideal time to plant your trees. Here’s why fall is one of the perfect times of the year for tree planting.

Benefits of Autumn Tree Planting

When you plant in the fall, you give trees an extra growing season before the stress of the summer heat hits. The combination of fall rain and moderately cold temperatures gives trees the ability to establish their roots, making it much easier for them to adjust for the extreme heat in the summer. Most people fear that younger trees aren’t able to withstand the winter months, however, this isn’t true. Trees go dormant during the winter, sort of like how a bear goes into hibernation. This allows them to slow down their metabolism and energy consumption, preparing them for the warmer temperatures of fall and summer. As long as you can plant a tree in the ground, it should remain dormant until the weather gets warmer.

Location is Key

Many don’t realize it, but the time of year you plant has little impact on your tree if you don’t plant it properly. This includes planting your tree in the right location. Before you even plant, evaluate your space to guarantee that your tree will be suitable to grow. Be wary of planting too close to surrounding structures. You also want to take into account how much sun, shade, and moisture your tree will receive in its planting spot.

Post-Tree Planting

Once it’s all said and done, take care of your tree once it is planted. This includes watering and mulching it. Fall tree planting typically means you will have to water it a bit more often. There are pros to fall tree planting, like a well-built root system and less maintenance. Whether you’re planting in the fall or spring, your newly planted tree will still require some care in its first year of life.
