Proper summer tree care prevents stress, encourages strong growth, and helps trees withstand any environmental issues.
Summer is a crucial season for your trees. The combination of warm weather, more sunlight, and possible drought conditions means your trees require specific attention to thrive and maintain their overall health. Proper summer tree care prevents stress, encourages strong growth, and helps trees withstand any environmental issues, which ensures they remain valuable assets to your landscape for years to come. Neglecting summer tree care could lead to weakened trees, increased susceptibility to disease and pests, and even long-term damage. This blog will cover essential practices to help keep your trees vibrant throughout the warm summer months!
Watering Trees for Summer Health
Watering is one of the most important aspects of summer tree care, especially when dry spells occur. Established trees are much more resilient than young ones, but even mature trees could suffer from drought stress. First, assess the soil moisture. Don’t just water it on a schedule; check the soil moisture two to three inches deep. If it feels dry, it is time to water. Water deeply and less frequently rather than shallowly and often. Deep watering can encourage roots to grow a lot deeper into the soil, making a tree a lot more resilient to drought. Try to moisten the soil to a depth of around 12 to 18 inches for mature trees. Slow and steady watering is the best method, too. Use a soaker hose or let a normal hose trickle at the very base of the tree for a few hours. Avoid sprinklers that mist leaves, which could encourage fungal diseases. Water early in the morning to help minimize evaporation and then allow the roots to absorb moisture before the heat comes for the day. Younger trees need more frequent watering than established and older ones. Water the young trees around one to two times per week if rainfall is insufficient.
Fertilization in the Summer
Generally, it is smart to avoid heavy fertilization in the peak of summer, especially for grown trees, since it can push new, tender growth that is susceptible to heat stress and drought. However, there are some exceptions. If a soil test indicates one specific nutrient deficiency, then a targeted application might be required. Young trees or those recovering from stress may benefit from a light application of an organic fertilizer early in the summer. If you have to fertilize, pick a slow-release formula to help provide nutrients gradually.
