What to Avoid Doing to Your Trees This Summer

Trees
Maintaining your trees is essential but you want to make sure you avoid these pitfalls this summer.

Summer is in full swing and it’s time to start thinking about your trees if you haven’t already. While summer is a time all about relaxing, enjoying time in your backyard or at the beach or wherever, it’s also a time to help cultivate nature and make sure the outdoors are enjoyable for many years to come. Plus, the summer season can also be a time for droughts, overwhelmingly hot days, summer storms, and more, so it’s important to avoid any pitfalls that could hurt your trees. Let’s take a look at some top things to avoid.

Overwatering

Moisture levels may dip over the summer because of the heat, but that doesn’t mean you need to go out there and overhydrate them. Watering too much can actually stifle the growth of a tree so make sure you’re getting the right amount. The rule of thumb is typically to check the condition of the soil near the tree; if it’s soggy or damp, you definitely don’t need to water your tree whatsoever. When watering, you want to try to get the roots of the tree themselves rather than just dumping water onto the soil.

Over Pruning and Trimming

Pruning and trimming are important parts of maintaining a tree’s health, but you don’t want to go overboard with it either. This is a season where trees ought to be in full bloom and have lush canopies, which may lead you to want to prune or trim them. Dormant periods are often the best time to trim and prune, so you may want to put the idea on the backboard for a bit and prepare better for the next season around.

Forgetting to Mulch and Water

Mulching is typically mostly done during the spring, but you may need to top off during the summer. This can do a lot for the condition of a tree and help add a nice visual appeal. This serves as an insulator that preserves moisture, meaning what watering you do is more effective. You don’t want to overwater just as we said, but watering is still important and you want to keep everything hydrated.
