Sudden Branch Drop Syndrome Explained

Sudden Branch Drop Syndrome Explained

Sudden branch drop syndrome will really stand out on your trees.

A subtle crack, a whooshing drop, and a loud thump can be scary to hear. After a heavy limb falls down, we start feeling uneasy about our trees! Are other branches going to follow suit, or will the entire thing fall down? Any tree issue is alarming, but sudden branch drop syndrome starts to stand out. Without warning, big, mature trees that appear healthy lose limbs. Read on to learn all about this bizarre tree phenomenon!

Why Do Branches Fall Off Your Tree in the Summer

That sounds like sudden branch syndrome, otherwise known as summer branch drop or sudden limb failure. During calm, but hot summer days, healthy tree limbs simply snap and fall off. We are not sure why this occurs, but a few trees are much more prone to this, specifically aging trees like oak, elm, sycamore, beech, and eucalyptus trees.

What to Do If This Occurs

Make sure to tend to your tree as soon as you notice any issues. The first fall may come unannounced, but trees afflicted by sudden branch syndrome might shed a couple more. So, you have to act quickly, assess your tree’s health and help take measure to reduce injuries and damage.

How to Prevent This

This is a tricky question since we do not know for sure why this happened. There are a couple of common theories about what causes sudden limb failure. A few experts say it is triggered by high humidity within a tree’s canopy, which leads to a high surplus of moisture that weakens the tree’s structure. Others believe it stems from an internal tree problem, such as bacterial wetwood. Even after many decades of research, the cause is still debatable. Because of this, it is hard to say just how to prevent it. If you notice a large chunk of the tree on the ground, consider calling our team of certified arborists to inspect the rest of the tree. Our team will look for dead offshoots, decay, or more visible hazards. Because your tree could be at risk, consider getting it inspected annually for the next few years.
