How Can You Tell If Shade Trees Are Right for Your Yard?

How Can You Tell If Shade Trees Are Right for Your Yard?

If you are considering adding trees to your lawn for their shade value, you have to look at the decision from each angle before making a purchase.

A tree could be an excellent investment to provide shade for your entire yard. But you have to do your research in advance, or the reality of owning a tree might not line up with what you needed or expected. If you are considering adding trees to your lawn for their shade value, you have to look at the decision from each angle before making a purchase. This blog has a few steps to help you decide if shade trees fit you and your yard properly. Read on to learn more!

Create a Diagram of the Lawn Layout to Find Safe Locations

First, you will have to sketch out a diagram of your property. It must indicate:

  • Your home
  • Water supply lines
  • Sewer or drain lines
  • Well and septic system, if applicable
  • In-ground pools
  • Concrete and asphalt

These structures could all be damaged by tree roots if you place your tree a bit too close. So sketch them out and look for spots on the property that are set well back from every one of these items. A distance equivalent to the tree’s height once it is fully grown should be a solid rule of thumb.

Consider the Benefits of Trees Vs. Other Shade Structures

Shade trees are just one option for shading windows and siding windows. You could also pick hedges, shade sails, retractable solar screens, awnings, vine-covered trellises, and tall bushes. Some of these work better for specific shade applications than others do. For example, solar screens are just for windows, whereas a hedge works better for shading a wall since you do not want to block the view with a permanent hedge right outside your window. So research your options and make a list of different pros and cons, then compare that to what you would gain and what the possible risks are.

Decide If You Are Willing to Wait for the Trees to Grow Out

Planting trees is a serious long-term investment. Even if you plant a tree in the right spot so it will shade your windows at the right time and day of the year once it has matured, you might have to wait three to ten years before you see some significant shading. It could even take longer to provide the amount of shade coverage you were waiting for.
