How to Correctly Plant a Tree

Tree

Do you know how to correctly plant a tree?

There’s a certain science to planting trees that makes it a more complex process than some people realize. Most figure all you need to do is dig a hole, plop down a sapling, and make sure you water it enough. Really, though, you have to make sure you’re giving your tree enough space to grow and prevent any kind of settling. If you want to know how to correctly plant a tree, read on below to find out more.

Step One: Tree Placement

Be sure that the hole you’re working with is at least two to three times as wide as whatever the root ball of your tree is. When placing the tree, be careful with the root ball so that it stays intact. When it’s in, you can rotate the entire thing so that the best side of the tree is facing the desired direction. If your root ball is wrapped in burlap, simply cut the twine and remove the burlap—or just push it to the bottom of the hole.

Step Two: Backfilling

Using soil and a shovel, backfill around the entirety of the root ball. Be sure that the trunk is straight and you haven’t messed with the placement of the tree while doing this. When you’re done, use whatever soil you have leftover to create a watering well which will promote healthy growing.

Step Three: Stake It

Make sure the stake is underground and goes through the root ball. This makes sure the sapling is secure. Tie the stake to the trunk loosely, as overtightening can prevent healthy growth. If you’re working with larger trees, you may need to use two or three stakes instead.

Step Four: Watering

Soon after planting, make sure your new sapling gets some water. You’ll want to ensure that the tree is watered every day for several weeks afterwards. After that, the roots begin to expand out into the soil, and you don’t have to worry about watering it as frequently. If you want to use fertilizer, wait until the following year and only add a small dose. Adding a few inches of mulch around the base of where you planted will help it stay healthy as well.
