The Basics of Trees and Fertilizer

Trees

Can fertilizer have some big benefits for your trees?

Fertilizer is a great tool that gardeners use to promote and boost the health of their lawns, trees, flowers, and shrubs. However, the act of fertilizer is more than just sprinkling some organic or inorganic materials on the ground. Using a specific method will ensure that the fertilizer will work the way it’s intended. Before you get started, it’s important to learn the basics of trees and fertilizer.

Why Use Fertilizer

Fertilizer has many great benefits forany tree. Not only does it bolster health, but it also helps fight off pests, disease, and other environmental factors that could adversely affect the growth of your trees. You can help your trees grow by allowing nature to take its course. What that means is allowing the minerals contained in leaves and the trees’ natural habitat to feed the ground around your trees.

How to Use Fertilizer

The best time of year to use fertilizer for your trees is from the fall to mid-spring. The temperatures during these times of year are the best for helping the roots of the trees absorb the nutrients that the fertilizer adds to the soil. If you fertilize in the mid to late summer, choose fertilizer that includes less nitrogen, which could make the trees weaker and more susceptible to damage in the winter months. For the most effectiveness, the fertilizer should be applied throughout the root system, which extends from the base of the tree outward, even beyond the length of the tree branches.

Types of Fertilizer

There are two types of fertilizer — organic and inorganic. Organic fertilizer is made of macronutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. It also features some micronutrients like iron, magnesium, and manganese. These minerals work together to positively impact the growth of trees. Inorganic fertilizers often help soil retain moisture from the rain and watering.
