Without any leaves, a tree will die, as it will not be able to photosynthesize. Sulfur dioxide is typically released through the creation of ore mining, especially in regards to any coal. Areas that see lots of ore mining are usually surrounded by trees that fumes have killed. Acid rain is also a problem. It can cause the branches and leaves to deteriorate as time passes. It should also be noted that the rates of these pollutants have gone down in recent years, but it is certainly not enough to stop the destruction of trees around the globe.
